One of the questions I get asked the most frequently is how to upload SVG files to Cricut Design Space. If you have a file from my Etsy shop Doodles and Grace or using one of my free files in my resource library, this tutorial will get you on your way to crafting!
What exactly is an SVG file?
An SVG file is a type of file that is designed using lines and points. It is the BEST type of file to use for cutting with your Cricut. Knowing to upload SVG files to Cricut Design Space is very helpful to get crafting with your Cricut because there are a lot of places that you can find SVG files for free and to buy! Other types of files, like PNG or JPG files are designed using pixels. This is why if you zoom in on one of those file types that it can get grainy looking.
Upload SVG Files into Design Space
Important: If you have downloaded a zipped file (which will be the case if you got your file from Doodles and Grace) you need to first unzip it. Your computer might be different, but *usually* you can unzip a file by clicking on it.
Open Cricut Design Space on your computer and then click on New Project.
Next, click on Upload from the menu on the left side.
Since you are uploading an SVG to cut you want to select the option on the left that says Upload Image.
Now, click on browse. You’ll want to find the SVG file that you downloaded and then click on Continue on the bottom right.
Tip: You may see a file named “Chrome HTML file” instead of an SVG file. This is the file that you will want to upload because this is your SVG file. Your computer is calling it this because you do not have a program installed that reads SVG files. But, no worries, this is what you want to use!
In this example, I uploaded my layered dolphin mandala SVG file. You should see a preview of your file in this spot. Next, name your image and put in some tags (separated by comma). I highly recommend using tags because it will make finding your files so much easier, especially once you have a big library of files! Finally, click on Save.
The last step is to insert your SVG into your project. You should see your SVG file listed under “Recently uploaded images.” Click on the picture of your file and then click on Insert Image on the bottom right.
And finally, you should see your SVG file and the layers!
And there you have it! That’s all there is to upload files to Cricut Design Space!
A few last tips…
- I do not recommend you drag and drop your file into Design Space as sometimes it can get weird. I highly recommend that you select browse (as I showed you in the steps) and then select your file.
- Make sure you upload the SVG file and not a PNG file for files that you are cutting.
- Make sure you unzip your file! If you get a message that says the file type is not supported it is likely because you have not unzipped your file.
- If you open your SVG file outside of Design Space you probably will not see the different layers of the design (unless you have a program installed that recognizes SVG files). Don’t worry – just upload it following my steps and it will work!
